Why Ventilation Matters
Each shower releases several litres of water vapour into the air. Without effective ventilation, this moisture settles on walls, ceilings and grout lines, where it can slowly penetrate materials. Over time, this leads to discolouration, peeling paint and, in the worst cases, mould growth.
Good ventilation ensures that humid air is quickly removed and replaced with dry air. It protects both the building and indoor air quality – and makes the bathroom more pleasant to use.
Mechanical Ventilation – The Reliable Solution
In modern UK homes, mechanical ventilation is the standard for bathrooms. This means a fan actively extracts moist air through a duct to the outside. The fan can be controlled in several ways:

Even a well‑designed system needs maintenance. Clean the fan regularly to remove dust, and check that the duct is not blocked. Inspect seals and grout lines for cracks and replace them if they have become brittle.
A simple digital hygrometer can help you monitor humidity levels. They should generally stay below 60 % for most of the time – if not, your ventilation may need adjustment or cleaning.
